Messages from Sue and Mike Hardman
This year we were very privileged to be able to join Jeannie and her
energetic team to go and present the scholarships in Surin, Burinam
and Loei.
Everywhere we went we were greeted with kindness and courtesy.
We saw hard working teachers and children, many of whom displayed
real talent. We were treated to wonderful performances of Thai dancing
by some of the students, and in one school, we discovered an excellent art teacher, whose students had produced work of a very high standard, some of which we were allowed to take home in exchange for a small donation.
The projects which Jeannie’s foundation has sponsored are all well planned and worthwhile. We saw
many new buildings and beautiful toilets, but we were especially interested in the agricultural projects
we saw in several schools. As well as teaching the children high standards of farming, they produce food
for the school and food to sell in order to pay back some of the money into the foundation. There was also
a thriving hair salon with very skilled stylists from Junior High School!
It was especially heartening to see some of the scholarship students who are now at university coming back
to speak to the children, to encourage them to strive to attain their dreams. We heard about past pupils who
are now sponsoring children and helping their old schools.
In contrast to all this, we were very shocked and saddened to visit two homes where there was extreme
poverty. These are just two of many who need help, and it made us realize how needy some children are.
Finally we were amazed at the achievements of Jeannie and her volunteers over the past 20 years, all due
to hard work, vision and determination. This is definitely a charity worth supporting to ensure a secure
future for hundreds of children. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful experience.

Helping Thai children benefits our own students as well. Thai students who strive to do their best encourage CA students to challenge themselves to their potential. This project also helps our students develop their self-esteem and confidence. Students often think that they have to wait until they become adults to contribute to the society, but this project makes them aware that they can make a difference to someone’s life, someone their own age, by providing a 6,000 yen scholarship a year per student. This amount is equivalent to a CA student saving 500 yen by not buying five soft drinks a month.
The four CA students who traveled with me to Thailand were very surprised to know that Jeannie started this projecttwenty-two years ago, long before they were born. They were convinced that CA should continue efforts to support Thai children. Read the following quotes from these students.
