Messages from Ana Maria Leonhardt

This year’s trip to the village schools with a record number of volunteers  including
3 men was a success.  A learning experience indeed! My most impressive visit
was to a farm house on stilts which consisted of only one room without electricity
and running water.

However the 15 year old girl looking after her 12 year old brother manages to
keep the place clean and tidy.  The reason our group went there was because this
young lady  when asked by her teacher what she would like in the future,
she replied, toilet. We were able to confirm that the siblings had to use the
near-by trees and bushes. As their parents who did not succeed in farming
went elsewhere for work, they have to fend for themselves.

When Jeannie and her group agreed to build them an outhouse, the girl started to cry.  It was an emotional
moment for all of us.  We were touched by this girl’s courage in asking for such a humiliating request.

We are reminded of our own basic comforts which we sometimes take for granted.

Helping Thai children benefits our own students as well. Thai students who strive to do their best encourage CA students to challenge themselves to their potential. This project also helps our students develop their self-esteem and confidence. Students often think that they have to wait until they become adults to contribute to the society, but this project makes them aware that they can make a difference to someone’s life, someone their own age, by providing a 6,000 yen scholarship a year per student. This amount is equivalent to a CA student saving 500 yen by not buying five soft drinks a month.

The four CA students who traveled with me to Thailand were very surprised to know that Jeannie started this projecttwenty-two years ago, long before they were born. They were convinced that CA should continue efforts to support Thai children. Read the following quotes from these students.
