Give them a chance

THAI VILLAGE CHILDREN

In recent years, the economic progress in Thailand has been great, many people became rich in Bangkok and in some other cities, but on the other hand there are still many very poor people in rural towns and villages, especially in the Northeastern part of Thailand. In these areas there are often floods in the rainy season and drought in the dry season.

No matter how hard the people work, they cannot overcome their poverty. Children don’t have enough food to eat nor clothes to wear. I myself come from Bangkok and I was shocked to see these poor children who don’t have anything. There was a hungry boy who ate insects in the rice field and died because the insects were polluted with agricultural chemicals.

In Thailand junior high school education is compulsory, but only 30% of the students can attend, the rest are too poor, having to curtail their studying to instead help their parents to work.

The Group has started to help the schools by working with the Principal and the teachers. The projects are as follows:

PROJECT
PURPOSE
Scholarship
To sponsor the children to continue their junior high school by giving them Yen 6,000 (Bht. 1,500) a year for one child and continue for 3 years until they finish junior high school.

Well
To compensate for the lack of water, especially in the dry season, both for drinking and to use in other projects such as the vegetable farm.

Vegetable Farm
Chicken Farm
Duck Farm
Fish Farm

This is a self-supporting project - teachers will get the fund to start the project and once they can get the produce, some will be used to cook lunches for the children and the rest sold to earn money to start the project again.

Shoes (Sandals)

Giving sandals to the children during Christmas time as a preset. (one pair of sandals cost Yen 50/Bht. 10)

During the time I worked with the Japanese volunteer group, we noticed that children don’t have enough clothes to wear nor enough food to eat. They bring only rice for lunch because their parents are farmers and they grow only rice and sometime tapioca trees. The school struggles to prepare lunch for them. So with the discussion with the teachers, I have made the following projects for the schools.

PROJECT

Myself and the volunteer members in Japan visit the villages to give scholarship and check the projects that the schools have made. Also they discuss with the teachers what can be done to help the children and schools.

At the same time they take the students’ pictures and students’ letters and bring them back. Pictures and letters with translation are sent to sponsors accordingly.

Helping Thai children benefits our own students as well. Thai students who strive to do their best encourage CA students to challenge themselves to their potential. This project also helps our students develop their self-esteem and confidence. Students often think that they have to wait until they become adults to contribute to the society, but this project makes them aware that they can make a difference to someone’s life, someone their own age, by providing a 6,000 yen scholarship a year per student. This amount is equivalent to a CA student saving 500 yen by not buying five soft drinks a month.

The four CA students who traveled with me to Thailand were very surprised to know that Jeannie started this projecttwenty-two years ago, long before they were born. They were convinced that CA should continue efforts to support Thai children. Read the following quotes from these students.
